Located in New York City, Hackert0wn is an epicenter for innovation and education to advance green technology and sustainability. By providing facilities and access to materials for makers and artists, hosting tele classes and hands-on workshops, generating local aquaponic produce and providing radically inclusive community space, Hackert0wn benefits the entire local and global community.

Headed by Sean Auriti, co-founder of Alpha One Labs, a hackerspace in Brooklyn, Hackert0wn meets the demands for high tech resources to drive innovation forward. Hackerspaces are physical spaces where everybody can come together and work on projects, brainstorm ideas, participate in training and activities and gain feedback.

Hackers today are not just guys on laptops pouring over code; they are the tinkerers and inventors who can break it then fix then add another feature to it and make it do something else. Hardware hacking differs from software hacking in that if you need a part, it can hold up your project, whereas with software hacking you can just download another library. This is what Hackert0wn solves. We have a retail marketplace where hackers can pick up supplies such as circuit boards, hardware, chemicals, fasteners and all those little pieces that cost double the retail price to ship that you need for your projects. And of course, if what you need doesn’t exist in a store, you can print it out on one of our 3D printers, or cut it out with one of our CNC mills.

Using recycled shipping container architecture and LED lighting, we provide a modular, eco-friendly place to hack.. Examples of some of the fearures we will include are detailed below. We’re looking forward to a successful crowdfund with your help!

The RaspberryPi Foundation is visiting Alpha One Labs September 23rd and giving talks and workshops about the RaspberryPi to both members and RaspberryPi users in the local community.

In case you haven’t heard of them, the Raspberry Pi Foundation is a charitable organisation founded with the aim of promoting the study of computer science and related topics, especially at school level. The Foundation is responsible for the design and sales of the popular RaspberryPi single board computer. You can find out more about the Foundation and the RaspberryPi here.

The plan for the event consists of the following;

Talk:

RaspberryPi: Past, Present & Future – An introduction to the RaspberryPi, including an overview of its history and development, details on the technical specification and an outline of future developments with many cool tech demos along the way. Followed by a Q&A session.

Tech Demos:

A chance to demonstrate various OS’s, new revisions of the Pi and the latest add-on expansion hardware.

Workshop:

A Taste of RaspberryPi – A chance to play with the RaspberryPi hands-on.

Show & Tell / Prizes:

An opportunity to display RaspberryPi projects from the community with prizes for notable projects.

The tour will be blogged/vlogged on the RaspberryPi website and will hopefully attract RaspberryPi enthusiasts and hackers/makers from across the areas we will be visiting, providing your hackspace with lots of worldwide publicity.

Join us for a 35-45 minute talk followed by audience Q&A with Andrew Kessler – Monday Aug 20th at 7pm

Andrew Kessler, author of Martian Summer: Robot Arms, Cowboy Spacemen and My 90 Days with the Phoenix Mars Mission(which just came out in paperback). In the summer of 2008, Andrew spent three months living and working in mission control of the last Mars expedition, along with 130 top NASA scientists andengineers, becoming the first outsider ever granted unfettered access to such an event.

Andrew is also CEO and cofounder of Togather, a free, online fansourcing platform that brings authors and audiences together. He holds a degree in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley and currently lives in Brooklyn, N.Y.

With another Mars mission currently underway and the new Curiosity rover expected to land on Mars on August 5, it’s the perfect time to stir up excitement among wannabe astronauts around the world. Andrew would love to share his personal account of life inside mission control during a NASA expedition to Mars, explain what’s going on with the current Mars mission, and show people why they should care about science and space.

“Mars Attack”
In the summer of 2008, Martian Summer author Andrew Kessler spent three months living and working in mission control of the Mars Phoenix expedition, along with 130 top NASA scientists and engineers, becoming the first outsider ever granted unfettered access to such an event. He’ll share his story of battling internal politics, temperamental robots, and the bizarre world of daily life on Mars’ clock. He’ll also provide an update of what’s going on with the current Mars Curiosity mission and why we should care, plus answer questions about Mars, mission control and space exploration.

Andrew lives in Brooklyn, but he’s going on the road and deep into cyberspace for his paperback book tour. His work has appeared in The New York Times and on the Discovery Channel, and he holds a degree in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley. He’s an extremely knowledgeable and charismatic expert who has experience with TV, radio and print media, as well as live speaking opportunities. You can hear him on NPR hereand see some videos of him speaking here:
