Alpha One Labs is pleased to announce the kickoff meeting for our Computational Theory Discussion Group. Please join us at 65 Maspeth Ave, #1A, Brooklyn, near the Graham Ave L, at 4pm on Saturday, January 30. (Add to Google Calendar)

At this kickoff meeting, we’ll be discussing such questions as:

Will we be reading Sipser’s Introduction to Computational Theory, or another book? (See this earlier post for other ideas.) If so, will we use the “International Edition”?

Will we be meeting Saturdays, 4pm-7pm?

How intensive will the meetings be? Will there be – gasp! – homework?

If you can’t make the kickoff but would still like to participate, please email Nada (nada at alphaonelabs.com). The kickoff will allow us to get to know each other and finalize our decisions. The first meeting will be post-Shmoocon, either Saturday February 13th or February 20th, allowing everyone time to get the book and start leafing through it.

The event is sponsored by Alpha One, but you don’t need to be a member to participate. (There is a $5 suggested donation for non-members, to help cover the costs of the space.) However, if you’re interested in this study group, it’s a safe bet that you might also be interested in a membership.

The other Wednesday an unnamed source who likes rabbits surprised us by bringing over some homebrew in a small keg. Â At first glance I thought it was one of those heinekin kegs that you buy at the store. Â After closer inspection, I realized that this was the real deal. Â The ingredients were a careful blend of hops and spices from the garden. Â I have to admit, it was the best tasting beer I’ve ever had. Â We talked about having a home brew class and it has been taken into consideration.

While we’re on the topic of food, our last meeting with the fondue was a blast. Â We got some cheese, veggies, chocolate, garlic and supplies. Â The fun started when I made a bracket with two pieces of wood holding 3 screws that acted as a holder for the metal bowl. Â I turned my back and all of a sudden everyone had concocted a base out of beer cans, and a double boiler with the other bowl. Â We positioned the torch and crossed our fingers. Â We had no idea what was going to happen, yet it turned out to be a success! Â The cheese and garlic made an awesome combination and the double boiler kept it at a nice melted consistency for us to chow down. Â Thank you to all that came out last Tuesday.

Stay tuned for more exciting things in the hacker food arena. Â Up next? Â Let us know in the comments.
