Twin Mendel RepRap 3d Printers [Focused Project]

What is a RepRap? One could simply answer that it is a 3D printer, but the philosophy behind this complex machine is more than the immediate function of its parts. Adrian Bowyer at Bath University, part of the founding RepRap team, explains the inspiration for the RepRap stems not from accomplishments in technology, but a phenomenon in nature: pollination.

A person with this machine can print out one for his friend and then this friend can print out more for his friends. We are the bees spreading the pollen to the flowers.

Our Queen bee, you might say, is a young man living in the heart of the Czech Republic. We have comissioned Jo PrÅ¯Å¡a who has been melting some hot black ABS for our evil twins using a heated print bed.

We’ve enjoyed seeing the brown box in the corner of his room fill up with RepRap parts. Slowly, some parts taking nearly 48 hours to print, the machine reproduces itself and soon will be given a heart and brain in Brooklyn. Thanks Jo!.

We recently became fans of the RepRap, specifically the “Mendel” version. We love the DIY appeal. Our Ponoko RepRap is currently being repaired and we’re preparing to print out 2 Mendels by the end of the year. After looking around for a RepRap meetup in NYC we did not find any, so we decided to start one! Join us every 3rd Sunday of the month at 2pm as we meet at Alpha One Labs to discuss and build our RepRaps. Signup to the google group here for more information:

We got a Ponoko RepRap 3d printer

We are well on our way to having 2 working RepRap Mendel models by the new year. Yesterday famulus stopped by with pretty much a full Ponoko RepRap. There are a few broken and missing pieces, but otherwise we’re going to try and get this thing working. We’ll also be building out our 2 twin Mendel RepRap 3d printers hopefully. With the combination of this and the mill we’ll be getting soon, we’ll be able to mill / print all the parts needed. Here is a picture of the parts hanging on our wall.
